Lakeside — Fourth- through sixth-grade students at Lakeside Elementary showcased poise and strong communication skills this week during Round 1 of the school’s Amazing Shake competition.

Classrooms buzzed with excitement as students practiced and demonstrated conversational etiquette by “working the room” — introducing themselves to community volunteers and local leaders, asking thoughtful questions, and sustaining respectful, engaging conversations. Volunteer judges evaluated students on criteria such as clarity, eye contact, tone, active listening and ability to make a genuine connection.

“Our community partners helped create a real-world setting where students could practice important interpersonal skills,” said a school spokesperson. “This experience builds confidence and prepares our students for future academic and career opportunities.”

After several rounds of conversations, judges announced the Round 1 winners, who will advance to Round 2 next week. Organizers praised all participants for their preparation and courage, noting that even those who did not advance gained valuable practice in public speaking and professional manners.

The event drew a strong turnout of community volunteers and leaders who said they appreciated the chance to mentor young students. Parents and teachers echoed that sentiment, describing the competition as an effective way to teach communication skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Round 2 is scheduled for next week, when advancing students will continue to sharpen their conversational skills under the guidance of community judges. Lakeside Elementary plans to hold the final rounds later this month, culminating in an awards ceremony to celebrate student achievement.
