Students at Lakeside Elementary in their BTS Arts class recently stepped back in time to explore the pivotal events of the American Revolutionary War through an engaging, student-directed curriculum that combined performance, research, and community engagement.
Performances and Biographical Research
The project invited fifth-grade learners to become historians and performers, staging dramatic reenactments of key moments from the Revolutionary era. Building on these performances, students conducted in-depth biographical research on influential figures who shaped the nation's founding.
Character Presentations Showcase Student Expertise
The culmination of the project featured students presenting their research in character, embodying the very figures they studied. The showcase included portrayals of:
George Washington – Military leader and first U.S. President
Sybil Ludington – Patriot and messenger during the war
Thomas Jefferson – Author of the Declaration of Independence
Betsy Ross – Seamstress credited with creating the first American flag
Deborah Sampson – Soldier who disguised herself to fight in the Continental Army
Community Celebration
The event welcomed parents and community members to witness students' expertise firsthand. Through their presentations, fifth graders demonstrated deep understanding of the foundational events and key figures that led to the creation of the U.S. Constitution.
This innovative approach to history education brought the Revolutionary War era alive, allowing students to connect with the past while developing research, performance, and public speaking skills.
BTS Arts ALP (@BTSArtsALP) continues to foster creative, interdisciplinary learning experiences that engage students as active participants in their education.
